How do I know if I have varicose veins?
In healthy veins, blood flows from the limbs to the heart, propelled by valves. These valves can weaken or fail altogether due to such factors as age, heredity, weight gain, stress and pregnancy. When this happens, the valves are no longer able to move blood along efficiently. The blood pools or even reverses at the site of the faulty valve. This condition is called venous reflux and results in varicose veins.
The symptoms of varicose veins include:
- Veins visible close to the surface of the legs that appear discolored, knotty, ropy or bulging
- Legs that are chronically aching and tired
- Itching, burning or throbbing in the legs
- Restless leg syndrome
- Difficulty walking more than short distances or pain on standing or sitting for long periods of time
How do I know if I have spider veins?
Unlike varicose veins, spider veins do not typically cause physical discomfort. However, many people seek treatment because they are unsightly, and spider veins can be an indicator of more significant venous problems. Spider veins appear as tiny red or blue lines with a cobweb- or roadmap-like appearance close to the surface of the skin on the arms, legs, chest, head or neck.
